Fair trade practices and Islam

What’s Fairtrade?

Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world.

Fairtrade tackles the injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against the most vulnerable.

Fairtrade means consumers pay sustainable prices for products (matches or above the market price), which enables workers in the developing world to improve their lives.

With Fairtrade you have the power to change the world every day. With simple shopping choices you can get workers and farmers a better deal.

And that means they can make their own decisions, control their future and lead the dignified life everyone deserves.

Wouldn’t you want to live such a life?

Then why not wish it for those who make your garments, as the Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wasallam) said that none of us will truly believe until we love for our brother what we love for ourselves

(Bukhari and Muslim).

At Modesty Hut we are on a mission to stock Fairtrade products in great numbers inshaAllah.

We are excited that The Providence hijab collection meets these criteria and comes from a factory where workers are given fair conditions and pay.

The hijabs are processed using non-toxic and eco-friendly technologies that are not harmful to workers or consumers.

The soft yarn weaved with traditional methods by weavers in rural India, providing education and job opportunities to better their community livelihood.

The concepts of fairness, equity, mutual respect and consideration for others are inherent in the moral teachings of Islam and so must be part of business dealings, too.

From the Quran:

‘Deal not unjustly, and you shall not be dealt with unjustly.’ (2:279)

‘God loves those who are fair and just.’ (49:9)

‘Give a full measure when you measure out and weigh with a fair balance’ (17:35)

‘Give full measure and full weight in justice, and wrong not people in respect of their goods.’ (11:85)

From Ahadith:

‘A truthful and trustworthy merchant will be in the company of the Prophets, the upright and the martyrs.’ (reported by Tirmidhi).

‘Allah shows mercy to a man who is kind when he sells, when he buys and when he makes a claim.’

(reported by Bukhari).
